Welcome address

This year the Eurofins International Seminar will be spotlighting Food Safety Solutions. The move away from its traditional focus on biotech developments and genetically-modified crops has been made with a view to opening up the seminar to a wider audience and to address consumer health and safety issues, ever-present concerns for the food industry. A word, however, to devotees of the original biotech programme: EIS 2011 will once again turn its attention to GM developments, a theme which will continue at alternate EIS events.

The food supply chain is both increasingly complex and increasingly global, putting added pressure on those whose role it is to ensure that the products on sale to the consumer are safe to eat. The challenge for the regulators is to put in place the safety nets needed to reduce the risk to consumers. It is the responsibility of the food operators to ensure that the tracking and monitoring systems are there to prevent problems from occuring.

At a time of one of the worst global economic downturns, there is need for tougher vigilance. The danger of product adulteration is always at its greatest when cost pressures lead to cutting corners and seeking seek out cheaper supplies. This is illustrated by the recent examples of the addition of mineral oil to sunflower oil, and melamine to milk powder.

Science plays an important role in addressing food safety issues. Analytical techniques have made considerable progress in all areas of food testing - providing greater specificity, lower detection thresholds, and improved accuracy. Applying the appropriate testing regime is undeniably the best way forward to solving food safety problems.

The Eurofins International Seminar will address some of these issues, with speakers from enforcement bodies, the food industry and academia to provide an update on topics of current concern in the food safety arena.

More information on the programme will be available soon. For the time being, don’t forget to put the dates of April 21st and 22nd in your diary.
We look forward to seeing you in Paris.
